A York first date inside the walls
Start on the walls themselves. Climb up at Bootham Bar, a few steps from the Minster, and walk a stretch together: there’s no rush, you can come down whenever you like, and the views over the rooftops fill any pause. Drop down into Stonegate or Petergate for a coffee afterwards.
Museum Gardens, beside the river and the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, is a calm spot on a fine afternoon. And as the night draws in, a walk through the Shambles or along the river is a lovely way to end the evening.
And when you fancy more room
The riverside path along the Ouse runs south to Rowntree Park, a good stretch for a longer walk and talk. The National Railway Museum, a few minutes’ walk from the station, has a hall full of locomotives to start the conversation for you, and makes a handy rainy-day meeting point if one of you is arriving by train. For a livelier night, Micklegate is the street for bars.
Harrogate members have the Stray and the Valley Gardens on their doorstep, and both make a gentle setting for a first meeting before a drink in town.

Easy to reach from across Yorkshire
York is one of the north’s big railway junctions. Leeds is under half an hour away by train, Newcastle about an hour up the East Coast Main Line, and there are direct trains to Sheffield too. Harrogate has its own line in through Knaresborough. Inside the city, the walls and the narrow streets make driving slow, so use the park and ride, walk or cycle, and agree a meeting point by one of the old gates: Bootham Bar and Micklegate Bar are easy for anyone to find.
