Singles on both banks of the Tyne, and one of the youngest crowds on Encounters.uk. Choose a section and see who’s about tonight.
Dating across Tyneside, from Kenton to Hebburn
Single in Newcastle upon Tyne? Look past the city centre, because our members here aren’t all packed into it. They’re spread across Tyne and Wear, north and south of the river, and these are some of the places they give as home:
- Newcastle
- Jesmond
- Kenton
- Elswick
- Lemington
- Forest Hall
- Seaton Burn
- North Shields
- Gateshead
- Felling
- Hebburn
- Southwick
That spread is handy when you’re planning to meet. A match in Gateshead can stroll over the Millennium Bridge to find you on the Quayside, and someone in North Shields can be in town on the Metro without going near a car park. If you split your time between places, our locations page lists every other city we cover.
Right at home in your twenties and thirties
Tyneside skews young. More than half of our members in Tyne and Wear are under 35, including about one in six aged 18 to 24, and roughly a third are 35 to 44. Only around one in eight is 45 or over, so if you’re in your twenties or thirties, you’re right in the thick of it here.

Over 40 and wondering where you fit? Mature Encounters is our section for grown-up dating after 40, and you can widen your distance setting to see people further afield. Our singles near me guide covers how distance shapes who you see.
First dates with the Tyne as your backdrop
Down on the Quayside
Start by the river. Walk from the Tyne Bridge along to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, cross over and go up to BALTIC, the contemporary art gallery in an old flour mill, then come back across for a drink on the Newcastle side. On Sundays the Quayside market gives you stalls to wander past while the conversation finds its feet.
Jesmond and the Dene
For a calmer daytime date, Jesmond Dene is a wooded valley with a waterfall, an old watermill and paths you can follow for an hour without noticing the time. Jesmond has bars and cafés for afterwards, and it’s a short Metro ride from the centre.
Grey Street and the Ouseburn
In town, meet at Grey’s Monument, walk down the long curve of Grey Street and duck into the Grainger Market or the Laing Art Gallery if it rains. Later on, the Ouseburn Valley, just east of the centre, has pubs and small music venues tucked beneath its bridges.
A day at the coast
When it’s going well, ride the Metro out to Tynemouth for the priory ruins, a walk on Longsands and fish and chips on North Shields Fish Quay. Hadrian’s Wall begins at Wallsend, on the same line, if one of you likes a bit of history.
The Metro gets you there and home
The Tyne and Wear Metro makes meeting halfway easy. It runs from the airport through the north of the city to Jesmond and the centre, crosses the river to Gateshead, Felling and Hebburn, and loops out to North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Choose a stop on a line you both use, so neither of you has to change, and look up the last train before you order another round.
Further afield, Newcastle Central is on the East Coast Main Line, with York about an hour south and Edinburgh around an hour and a half north. If your matches stretch that far, our York and Edinburgh pages describe the crowd in each, and Leeds is an easy trip too.
From Sunderland or Carlisle?
You’re in the right place. Sunderland is on the Metro as well, so a night on the Quayside is simple to get to and simple to get home from. Carlisle sits at the far end of the Tyne Valley line, with Hadrian’s Wall running between the two cities. Set your distance to match how far you’re happy to travel and Tyneside members will show up in your daily suggestions.
Fun, romance or a bit of both
More than four in five of our Tyne and Wear members have joined Casual Encounters, the adult section for chemistry without commitment. About one in eight are in Single Encounters, hoping a first date becomes something more, and Mature Encounters is smaller here. Every section has a sign-up of its own, so start with the one that matches what you want now and add another if that changes.
Newcastle dating questions, answered
Can we have a day at the coast without a car?
Easily. The Metro runs out to Tynemouth, where the priory ruins and Longsands beach are a short walk apart, and North Shields Fish Quay is close by for fish and chips. Whitley Bay is a couple of stops further up the coast.
How young is the Newcastle crowd?
Mostly under 45. More than half of our Tyne and Wear members are under 35, and close to nine in ten are under 45.
Where’s a good place to meet halfway in Newcastle?
Monument. Both Metro lines stop there, Grey Street and the Quayside are a short walk away, and there’s enough going on around it to take the pressure off a first meeting.
