Belgrave Road’s Golden Mile is made for a long dinner, and its Diwali lights each autumn are one of the city’s great sights.
Out of town, Bradgate Park has roaming deer, rocky outcrops and the ruins of the house where Lady Jane Grey grew up, with a climb to Old John tower for the view. Near Market Harborough, the flight of locks at Foxton makes a gentle canal-side walk, and back in the city, Abbey Park, with the National Space Centre close by, suits a daytime date that needs no planning.
Easy to meet in the middle
There’s no tram in Leicester, and you won’t miss one. The centre is walkable end to end, buses come in from Wigston, Birstall and the outer estates, and the station on London Road is a few minutes from New Walk. Midland Main Line trains link Leicester with Market Harborough to the south and Loughborough to the north.
Nottingham is around half an hour away by train and Birmingham about an hour west, so stretching your distance puts both cities on the table if you don’t mind travelling for the right person.
