Plymouth singles, and the rest of Devon too
Want to start dating in Plymouth? You’re in the right place. Encounters.uk has members across the city, in districts such as Mannamead and Manadon, and this page covers the whole county. Members also give Exeter, Torquay, Paignton, Newton Abbot, Chudleigh, Okehampton, Bradninch, Holsworthy and Barnstaple as home, so both of Devon’s cities, the Torbay coast and the north of the county all have people on the site.
Plymouth itself has more of our Devon members than any other town, which makes it the obvious place to meet. The natural harbour and the sea views are a destination in their own right, while the parks around the city suit a gentle afternoon with a new match, so a first date here rarely takes much planning.
A first date wherever you live in Devon
Devon is a big county, and first dates go better when neither of you has crossed the whole of it to get there. These are easy, public places to meet, town by town:
| If you live in | Try a first date at |
|---|---|
| Plymouth | The Hoe, by Smeaton’s Tower, then a drink on the Barbican around Sutton Harbour |
| Exeter | A coffee on the Cathedral Green, or the Quay beside the River Exe |
| Torquay and Paignton | Torquay harbour, or the seafront and pier at Paignton |
| Newton Abbot and Chudleigh | A walk up to Haytor, on the eastern edge of Dartmoor |
| Okehampton | The Granite Way, a path along the old railway line from the town with no cars to dodge, on foot or by bike |
| Barnstaple and North Devon | The Tarka Trail along the estuary, or the Pannier Market in town |
Making the most of Plymouth
In the city, the Hoe is the classic opener: open grass, Smeaton’s Tower in its red and white stripes, Plymouth Sound spread out in front of you and plenty of benches if the chat is going well. Walk down to the Barbican for cobbled streets and the old harbour, where the Mayflower Steps remember the Pilgrims who sailed in 1620 and bars and restaurants line the quays. For an evening by the water, Royal William Yard at Stonehouse, once the navy’s victualling yard, is now lined with places to eat and drink.
Keep the little ferry across the Tamar to Mount Edgcumbe up your sleeve for a second date, and read our safety advice before the first.
Find your match at any age in Devon
Devon’s members cover a wide spread of ages. About one in six is 18 to 24 and about one in five is 25 to 34, so nearly four in ten are under 35. Those aged 35 to 44 make up around three in ten, and the over 45s another three in ten, which means there are people here in their twenties, thirties, forties and beyond.

Getting together across Devon
Plymouth and Exeter are about an hour apart by train or along the A38, and the railway runs right beside the sea at Dawlish and Teignmouth, which is worth the ticket on its own. From Exeter, the Tarka Line runs up to Barnstaple and the Dartmoor Line out to Okehampton, while trains for Torquay and Paignton branch off at Newton Abbot.
Across the Tamar in Cornwall? The Tamar Bridge and the Torpoint ferry make Plymouth an easy trip. Heading the other way, our Bristol page covers the next big city up the line, and every location lists the rest.
Exeter, you’re in the right place
If it’s dating in Exeter you’re after, this page covers you. Exeter is one of the places our Devon members give as home, your matches favour people nearby wherever in the county you are, and the Cathedral Green and the Quay make easy first-date spots at your end of the line.
Fun tonight, or love for keeps?
About four in five of our Devon members are in Casual Encounters, which is strictly 18+ and all about no-strings fun. Over 40 and hoping for company or something lasting? Mature Encounters has about one in seven of our Devon members, and Single Encounters is for singles of any age who want a relationship. You join each section separately and each has its own crowd, so start with the one that fits, or try more than one.
Questions about dating in Devon
I’m just over the Tamar in Cornwall. Is this page for me?
It’s the closest one we have. The Tamar Bridge from Saltash and the Torpoint ferry bring south-east Cornwall within easy reach of the city, and your daily matches weigh up how far apart you live, not which side of the river you’re on.
What’s a classic Plymouth first date?
The Hoe, then the Barbican. You get a walk with a view of Plymouth Sound and a choice of bars by the old harbour when you want to sit down, and both are easy to leave if it isn’t working.
Does this page cover Exeter and Torbay?
Yes. It covers the whole of Devon, including Exeter, Torquay, Paignton, Newton Abbot and Barnstaple, and your daily matches take into account how far apart you live.
